Angular vs React
Why Angular feels more natural than React from a backend-oriented engineering perspective.
Over the past few years, I’ve had the chance to work with both Angular and React on various front-end projects. While both are powerful tools, I’ve developed a strong preference for Angular — and I’d love to share why.
1. Object-Oriented Programming
Angular strongly encourages the use of classes and object-oriented principles. As someone with a backend background, this feels very natural — especially when building structured, maintainable code with inheritance and interfaces. In contrast, React has been moving heavily toward function components, which I personally find less intuitive for large-scale projects.
2. Powerful Dependency Injection System
Angular’s built-in dependency injection system is incredibly powerful — on par with what you’d find in frameworks like Java’s Spring Boot. It makes managing services and their dependencies feel clean, testable, and scalable, especially when dealing with complex interactions between components.
3. Simple Change Detection
With Angular, you bind to variables directly and let the framework handle change detection behind the scenes.
It just works.
React’s useState and useEffect model, while flexible, often feels less intuitive and harder to reason about when managing complex component state.
4. Clear Separation of Concerns
Angular separates HTML templates from component logic. For me, this makes the layout more readable and organized. React’s JSX — while powerful — sometimes blurs that separation in a way that takes getting used to.
5. Built-in Ecosystem
Angular comes with routing, forms, HTTP services, and more out of the box. React, on the other hand, often requires stitching together multiple libraries. That flexibility is great — but sometimes, having well-defined defaults can boost productivity.
Closing Thought
As a backend developer diving into frontend, Angular has felt more aligned with how I think about structure, organization, and scalability. It has been more intuitive, more productive, and more fun. Which do you prefer — Angular or React — and why?
